Large-size LCD LED penetration will surge in the next three years

This year, LED backlight (BLU) is extremely bright with the development of LCD TVs, monitors and NBs. Some organizations have said that LED backlight panels are not only the future development trend, but also the upcoming style. "According to the statistics below 10 inches, the LED backlight penetration rate is close to 100%; in the NB market, the LED NB penetration rate has increased from 14% in 2008 to 60% in 2009, and it is expected that the overall LED NB shipment will be nearly replaced in 2010. CCFL, the penetration rate is 95%."

Faced with the development prospects of the LED backlight market, Dr. Wang Gang said, “In the medium and large size LCD module, the sidelight technology scheme based on white LED is gradually matured, which makes the number of LEDs decrease sharply and shrinks with CCFL backlight. The module price difference is expected to reach 30% in the large-size LCD module in 2013. In particular, in 2009, domestic and foreign first-line TV brand manufacturers have launched white LED LCD TVs, which are mainly selling ultra-thin selling points, known as LED LCD TVs. In the year, LED TV has entered a fast-rising channel. In 2009, LED TV penetration rate has reached 3%. It is optimistic that this number will surge to around 30% in 2012."

The high cost structure of LED backlight is one of the obstacles to the new generation of LED display applications, but "in the small and medium size LCD module application, the LED backlight and CCFL backlight price difference is almost close," for the medium and large size LED backlight, "optimistic It is estimated that it will take at least 3~5 years. In the case of an LED-backlit LCD TV, the LED backlight module is divided into two types, a direct type and a side-in type, depending on the incident position of the light source. "The direct type and the side light type have their own advantages. The former can realize the regional dynamic backlight technology and the RGB three-color LED backlight technology, and thus have the advantages of high contrast, high color reproduction, low power consumption, etc.; the latter is easy to realize thin and light, At present, the white-light LED LCD TV based on the edge-light type has become the mainstream of LED LCD TVs due to its low-cost, ultra-thin and other technical advantages."

Research has pointed out that human eyes can hardly distinguish the difference between RGB LEDs and white LEDs because the human eye is most sensitive to the brightness of the first eye, while the brightness of RGB LEDs and white LEDs is almost the same. Cost considerations use white LEDs.

Dr. Wang Gang said that the RGB LED-backlit LCD TV has much better color performance than the white LED LCD TV. The former has a color gamut of more than 105% and the latter has a color gamut of about 70%. At present, white LED has become the mainstream of low-end LED LCD TVs, which is forming a rapid replacement for CCFL. However, we believe that as LEDs continue to increase in volume, their performance continues to increase and prices are gradually reduced. It is believed that the cost of RGB LED backlight modules will continue to approach CCFL, coupled with its high color reproduction, high dynamic contrast, low power consumption and many other advantages. Bring higher display quality to LCD TVs, and believe that RGB LEDs will become the mainstream of the future.

Mixing light and cooling is an important part of LED backlight technology

At present, when LED backlights are applied to products such as televisions, heat dissipation has always been a technical issue of concern. Especially for large-size TVs, solving the heat dissipation problem will lead to an increase in cost and an excessive price. "The advantages and disadvantages of heat dissipation directly affect the length of LED life. At present, the direct-lit LED backlight solution has little problem in heat dissipation, while the edge-lit LED backlight is characterized by ultra-thin, which is in line with this feature. The actual heat dissipation scheme has low thermal resistance of LED package. Technology, metal-based printed circuit boards, super-thermal materials, etc."

Dr. Wang Gang also pointed out that "mixing light and heat dissipation are important contents of LED backlight technology. The design of LED backlight board generally does not want to use too many numbers, but if less light source is used, the brightness will not be uniform. It is indeed a contradiction. This is also the main content and goal of the mixed-light design. BOE uses the industry's general optical simulation software combined with independent development of simulation algorithms to continuously optimize the optical structure and find a balance between performance and cost."



When it comes to color temperature control, Dr. Wang Gang said that for backlights, the color management and correction system can be used to adjust the backlight color temperature to balance the color decay caused by long-term or high-temperature LED illumination; Start with and try to reduce the color dispersion of the same batch of LEDs.

At present, BOE's mass production LED panels are mainly concentrated in the 4.5-generation line and the 5th-generation line. The product specifications are 2.4 inches, 8.9 inches, 10.1 inches, 14.1 inches, and 15.6 inches, all of which are edge-lit. Some models are introduced to domestic and foreign first-line brand manufacturers.

Pocket projector technology - projection of future trends

In addition to LED backlights, the application of LED light sources on rear projection TVs and the application of LED light sources on pocket projectors have also received much attention. "Projection technology has been the focus of attention as a display technology, especially LED light sources instead of light bulbs. The color wheel, and the size of the entire projector is reduced, only the size of the pocket, greatly enhancing the portable performance, which makes the technology attract attention. The outstanding characteristics of the LED light source on the pocket projector are light, quiet, energy-saving and long life. ."

Dr. Wang Gang said, “The major projector manufacturers are also in the same challenge to the extreme. BenQ, LG, Samsung and other big manufacturers have developed pocket projections that can be placed in “pockets”. This technology will undoubtedly be a projection of the future trend, and will even become an important pole in the future of multi-pole display technology."
