Giants scramble to advance the card, Apple applied for 34 Micro-LED patents in Korea

Bloomberg reported that Apple is secretly developing the next generation of MicroLED display panel technology, ready to get rid of Samsung, LG and other companies in the future.

According to the latest news from foreign media, Apple has applied for more than 30 patented technologies of MicroLED in South Korea, indicating that Apple's huge determination to develop display panels will also form some kind of containment for the two giants in Korea.

According to the Korea Herald website, Apple previously acquired LuxVue Technologies, which develops MicroLED display panel technology. According to the Korean government, in the past ten years, Apple has applied for 11 patents related to MicroLED, and LuxVue has applied for 23 patents. This means that Apple has a total of 34 MicroLED patents.

The sheer number of patents indicates that Apple is very likely to use MicroLED displays in future electronic devices.

Apple's patent application covers various technologies of the MicroLED panel, such as chip structure, control system, and control handling of the Micro-LED panel.

Kim Jong-chan, head of the display panel department at the Korea Intellectual Property Office, said that Apple applied for these patents to the Korean government because South Korea has two major display panel giants, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, and two Korean companies may be in the future. The MicroLED display is used in the device.

Apple has been developing and registering various technology patents. Many foreign media pointed out that some patents applied by Apple are not necessarily used in certain products or technologies. Apple's purpose is to pre-position competitors and contain them in advance. The future technological competition dominates.

However, the number of such MicroLED patents indicates that Apple is no longer as simple as containing opponents.

So far, Apple does not have the large-scale manufacturing capability of display panels, and needs to be purchased from companies such as Sharp, LG, Samsung, and Japanese monitors. In the iPhone X phone released last year, Apple purchased the OLED screen exclusively supplied by Samsung Display.

According to reports, the cooperation between Samsung and Apple is not ideal. Samsung OLED has a problem of low yield, which has caused the downstream Foxconn Group to not produce enough mobile phones. In addition, after the mobile phone was released for sale, many consumers found glaring green lines on both sides of the screen, which is likely to be a technical problem for display manufacturers.

In addition, Samsung's exclusive supply also affected Apple's purchase price. According to Bloomberg News, the same OLED screen, Samsung's sales to its own mobile phone department is $85, but the price of selling to Apple is as high as $110, and Samsung has made a huge profit.

The $110 OLED screen price directly pushes up the price of the iPhone X. The high price of $999 has become a major reason for the sluggish sales of this phone.

According to Bloomberg News, in the field of Micro-LED display panels, Apple has made a large amount of investment, in addition to corporate acquisitions, patent registration, Apple has a factory near the California headquarters, secretly small-scale research and development.

Korean layout

Samsung and LG are the world's first group of display panel manufacturers, both companies have targeted MicroLED technology.

In the past ten years, Samsung Electronics has applied for 24 patents for MicroLED, Samsung Display has applied for 24 patents, LG Electronics has applied for 29 patents, and LG Display has applied for 35 patents.

Earlier this year, at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Samsung Electronics released the world's first large-size TV based on a Micro-LED screen.

In response to competitor Samsung, it is reported that LG Electronics is also preparing to showcase its first Micro-LED TV at the IFA Consumer Electronics Show in September. LG Electronics has collaborated with the brothers LG Display and LG Innotek on this product.

Technical difference

According to reports, the Micro-LED display panel uses a tiny array of light-emitting diodes, which can further reduce the size of electronic devices, provide higher display brightness, and use less power.

At present, OLED has become the most popular display panel. Among the three mobile phones released this year, Apple may adopt OLED screens in two mobile phones. It is reported that compared with OLED, MicroLED screen has a longer life, higher brightness, no burn-in, and the color is easier to debug.

In 2012, the Korean government received only 12 patent applications for MicroLED technology, and last year it increased to 120, and the number has increased tenfold.

In the past ten years, the number of MicroLED patents applied by companies in Korea was 358, of which 119 were applied by Korean companies and 116 by foreign companies.
