But when I started experimenting with more complex recipes and multiple cooking steps, I found it helpful to have a helper and the cooking experience was more fun. As the saying goes: If you can't beat them, join them. The same principle applies to active clamped flyback. Everyone wants smaller AC/DC converters, especially when they are used for cell phone or tablet chargers. Because of simplicity, a flyback converter is the preferred topology because it can effectively convert AC power to DC power with very few components. However, how small a flyback circuit can be limited is because the loss associated with transformer leakage inductance limits the actual size. So far, each design responds to this by reducing leakage inductance. However, the active clamp flyback breaks this cycle. Figure 1: Active Clamp Flyback, Red Leakage, Active Clamp Blue Active clamping can store energy and transfer it to the output instead of dealing with leakage inductance by consuming energy in a resistor-capacitor-diode (RCD) or Zener clamp. Smart Control Clamps also provide zero voltage switching. This eliminates two major sources of loss, resulting in greatly reduced size. If you are going to use a GaN field effect transistor (FET) with lower output capacitance and on-resistance, the adapter can be halved! However, the details are critical because if the active clamp is not intelligently controlled, it will actually degrade efficiency. Active clamped flyback is just an illusion in the past, because there was not enough intelligent controller to implement this topology. However, this phenomenon has changed in UCC28780. This active-clamp flyback controller is designed specifically for silicon (Si) or GaN-based power stages, making this topology suitable for any design. The UCC24612 synchronous rectifier meets the US Department of Energy (DoE) Class VI or the Code of Conduct (CoC) Tier 2 standard.
