Tamping sensors, digitizing, and networking to lay the foundation for smart manufacturing

Ning Zhenbo, chief advisor of the China Aviation Industry Corporation Information Technology Center, proposed at the 2017 China Jiangsu Smart Factory Planning and Construction Report that smart manufacturing begins with state awareness. To achieve true smart manufacturing, it is necessary to have three basics first. Conditions: First, inexpensive sensors; second, digitizing everything that can be digitized; and third, networking everything that can be connected.

Ning Zhenbo refutes the prevailing view in the industry that "doing intelligent manufacturing is a multi-purpose robot." He said: "If smart manufacturing is a machine substitution, the lessons Foxconn has left are already profound enough."

“Foxconn boasted at first that it would build 1.5 million robots in five years instead of 1.5 million industrial workers. But now, how much did it make? Only 40,000 units couldn’t keep up, and they stopped.” Didn't replace a few people! This is obviously listening to and creding the words of the fake experts and eating them."

At the end of 2011, Chairman of Foxconn Terry Gou said publicly that Foxconn will assemble 1 million robotic arms in 2014 and plans to complete the first batch of automated factories within 5 to 10 years. This is the so-called “Million Robot Project”. As of the end of 2016 after 5 years, only about 40000 units were assembled. According to expert analysis, the main reasons for failure include insufficient accuracy of the robot, incompetence of full assembly line work, upgrades and maintenance costs, and so on.

Robots are far from the whole of intelligent manufacturing and are the consensus of the participating experts. Academician Tan Jianrong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, an adjunct professor at Zhejiang University and a vice chairman of the China Mechanical Engineering Society, further believes that the degree of automation is not as high as possible for the current Chinese manufacturing industry.

According to preliminary statistical data from the IFR International Robot Federation, only 90,000 Taiwan (sets) of industrial robots were purchased in China last year alone, which accounted for one-third of the total orders of industrial robots worldwide. It is predicted that by 2019, the annual orders for domestic industrial robots in China will increase to 160,000 units (sets).

Tan Jianrong said: "To a manufacturing and manufacturing enterprise, it is necessary to achieve a reasonable division of labor and coordination among people, machines, and robots in order to maximize the efficiency of production. It is not just to look at the level of automation."
