Texas Instruments LED driver provides PWM dimming and overheat protection

Texas Instruments (TI) announced the introduction of a 1.5A constant current DC / DC buck converter that integrates frequency synchronization, pulse-width modulation (PWM) dimming, and thermal foldback to provide leading functions . The TPS92510 has a wide input voltage range of 3.5V to 60V and integrated MOSFET. Combined with TI WEBENCH LED Architect tool, it helps lighting developers to quickly design power management circuits with up to 97% efficiency, which can drive up to 17 strings of high-brightness LED strings to fully meet the needs of automotive, industrial and general lighting applications.

Compared with traditional buck LED drivers, TI TPS92510 internally generates a clock or synchronizes with an external PWM clock source to achieve fixed frequency operation. When implementing multiple light strings, the use of external clocks can not only solve the problem of beat frequency that may occur in lighting applications, but also simplify the design of EMI filtering. Overheating protection can ensure stable light output under LED over-temperature conditions and improve the safety of lighting environment.

TPS92510 belongs to the TI LED driver product family. The series includes 0.5A LM3402, 1.0A LM3404 and 1.5A LM3406 hysteretic non-synchronous constant current LED buck regulators with LED open-loop protection, low power shutdown and thermal shutdown (thermal shutdown) and other functions.

• 100kHz to 2.5MHz fixed switching frequency can be synchronized, greatly improving efficiency and reducing solution size;

• LED overheating protection mechanism with external negative temperature coefficient (NTC) to avoid damage to the LED array due to overheating while maintaining low light output;

• Dedicated PWM dimming input from 100Hz to 1kHz. There is no color shift or flicker when adjusting the brightness of the LED.
