Volvo Pedestrian Detection System: Protects passersby and kangaroos

In terms of driving safety, Volvo wants to protect not only the passengers inside the car, but also the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, moose and kangaroos outside the car. The bus inspection system being tested by the Swedish car manufacturer is able to automatically alert when an accident is detected.

The system, called the Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection System, relies on a camera to scan the environment around the bus and then examines pedestrians and cyclists through image processing systems and algorithms. If the risk factor is low, the bus will emit a certain frequency of interference sound; once the system determines that an accident is about to occur, the speaker will be activated automatically, and the driver will be alerted by sound and light signals.

This system undoubtedly provides another solution to the hidden dangers of electric vehicles being too quiet and the dangers faced by pedestrians in busy urban traffic.

According to Peter Danielsson, Volvo Bus Vehicle Function and Safety Director, although the pedestrian detection technology used by other vehicles is similar to this system, they have improved the bus and removed the automatic Brake function.

“We are the only car manufacturer to offer solutions to both drivers and unprotected road users.”

The system will first be tested on Line 55 in Gothenburg, Sweden, which is the operating line for Volvo's first all-electric bus last year. The company revealed that this technology will be gradually put into use in European cities in 2017.
