Visual music is the goal of this Taiwanese start-up company.
This virtual reality application not only provides a new immersive method of experiencing music, it is also an innovative tool for creating music. We can think of it as the VR version of GarageBand, but it is more visual and audio quality.
LyraVR became the first company to be selected into the HTC Vive X Accelerator program in 2016 and was one of 12 startups participating in TechCrunch Disrupt in New York this year.
The News Lens recently interviewed Dilun Ho, co-founder and executive director of LyraVR, and Leo Chen, head of marketing and partnership. The following is an interview segment of the VR play network.
Reporter: What was your reason for starting LyraVR?
Dilun Ho: I was a bit late in the game. This is actually the first company I started. Earlier, I had the opportunity to partner with others to start a company, but I could never insist on it. I ended up always returning to work at the company for web development and web design. After working in this field for more than 15 years, I have generally understood the development of the Internet, and I have mastered a large number of Internet technologies. Now I think that virtual reality is something similar, but I believe it will become even hotter than the Internet. This is why I gave up everything and focused on doing it.
I also always want to develop games. In the early days, it was really hard. You need to set up an entire team that takes time and capital to develop the game. Now, I can already achieve it all.
I used to play guitar and played in many different bands. I even try to sell music. I used to have friends to perform, but eventually I needed to save money for the show. After seeing this opportunity, I think we can do things related to music and virtual reality because it is a perfect combination.
I have been paying attention to VR for a long time, and then I discovered that there is such a hacker loose, including the development kit of the early Oculus Rift. So I think I must participate because I never rely on myself to develop a complete game. I worked with a team that happened to focus on VR. We were the first Taiwanese VR team to develop VR demo for this kind of event. It was January 2015.
Everything started. We started making LyraVR prototypes in the second half of 2015.
Reporter: So this idea was first born in 2015. How far have you gone so far?
Dilun Ho: We are now in beta, so we have made great progress. It turns out that this is just a hacker loose game application and there are many bugs. It is now a complete program that you can use to combine and create music and interact with music and sound.
Reporter: Have you finalized the specific release time?
Dilun Ho: We are trying to launch the market by the end of this year. The beta version is already on the line (currently 200 users are currently being tested), but we want to work closely with users to focus on areas that need to be added or polished. Many VR games and applications now have a short production cycle, because if your R&D time exceeds one year, the hardware will change. This is one of the biggest challenges. In order to survive, you need to have a very short development cycle.
Leo Chen: Actually a little bit disappointing, because we get very positive feedback from beta test users. There are very few negative criticisms.
Dilun Ho: We are waiting for really picky people. Our beta release was later than the original plan, so this is why it is more sophisticated than the original plan. But it does not matter. We hope to target those productive consumers and those interested in music. We hope that everyone can play games or create music through virtual reality.
Why did you decide to launch LyraVR in Taiwan?
Dilun Ho: Taiwan is our home. This is the first point. The culture here gave birth to us, and Taiwan’s music market is very large. This is a very good place for us, especially since the virtual reality market is rising.
Most of the computer components that are interesting are designed and produced in Taiwan, and they rely on VR. So this is a great advantage for us. If we were in the United States, it would be very difficult because VR is also very hot there. Compared with Taiwan, we will not be so prominent there.
Reporter: Which market are you targeting?
Dilun Ho: Our initial strategy was B2B. We are working with some artists and activists, but our consumer version will target the United States because it is the largest market. We are using Taiwan as a development base and cooperate with local major artists and activists, and this is already in progress.
Reporter: What is the current source of funds for LyraVR?
Dilun Ho: We got a small seed investment from the HTC accelerator, so our current resources are very limited. So we need to cooperate with the B2B project to promote our brand, and at the same time develop new features.
Reporter: Do you have a competitor or a potential competitor?
Dilun Ho: I would say yes, but they are not direct competitors. There are other programs that are creating music through VR but not as innovative as we are.
Leo Chen: They are in the same area with us, but our concept is different from them.
Dilun Ho: Our next step is to add a multiplayer game feature. Anything with social elements will enhance the experience, especially if you are playing music.
Reporter: What do you expect from New York TechCrunch Disrupt Conference?
Dilun Ho: One of our goals is to find a suitable partner. We are not looking for investment because we are doing what we want to do, but if we can get funding, we can complete it faster.
Reporter: I believe you are very familiar with the entrepreneurial situation in Taiwan and the United States. What is the difference between the two?
Dilun Ho: I think the biggest difference is investment. The United States has more investment opportunities and more resources. But I see the Taiwan government is actively promoting this, so this is a good sign.
Leo Chen: The culture of American incubation startups is even more intense. In Taiwan, this has only just begun and they are beginning to grow.
Reporter: What do you think the Taiwan government can do?
Leo Chen: Clearly what resources can be provided. This is very confusing now and it is difficult to determine. But if it is more transparent, people who are interested will be more likely to know the existence of resources.
Dilun Ho: If the approval process is simpler, it will be easier. At present, paperwork takes a lot of time, especially since all must be done in Chinese, which is a challenge for us. If the government wants to nurture and expand Taiwanese start-up companies and attract talents, I think it is necessary to establish an English application process.
