[Abstract] This paper introduces the application of battery online monitoring technology in power system, points out the problems existing in the application, and puts forward its own views on the future development direction of battery online monitoring technology.

1 Introduction The substation battery plays an extremely important role in the power system as a backup power source. In the event of a battery pack failure or other accident, the power supply system will be paralyzed, causing equipment outages and other major operational accidents. In recent years, with the widespread use of valve-regulated sealed lead-acid batteries (hereinafter referred to as valve-controlled battery cells) in power systems, accidents caused by battery failures have occurred, even causing fires and power outages at all stations. Due to the special valve-controlled sealing structure, the valve-controlled battery makes it impossible for us to accurately grasp the health of the battery. The advantage of “maintenance-free” has become a shortcoming and difficulty in battery operation management. While improving battery performance and reducing maintenance workload, how to quickly and effectively detect early failure batteries and predict battery performance trends has become a new topic in battery operation management. At present, in addition to routine maintenance and detection methods such as verification discharge and terminal voltage, some new detection methods have emerged with the development of technology. The new detection technology of battery online monitoring has gradually applied to the power system.

2 Battery online monitoring technology application situation The battery online monitoring device currently used in power system substation is a battery inspection instrument. The battery inspection instrument is divided into two types. One is a patrol instrument for measuring the battery cell voltage. It consists of a main control module and several acquisition modules. The main module receives the commands of the monitor and sends the battery data to the monitor of the DC device. Each module in the acquisition module collects the voltage, current and temperature of 10 to 20 cells. The monitor of the DC charging device can display the voltage of each single battery, determine the number of the faulty battery and give an alarm. This type of battery patrol monitor is generally provided by the DC equipment manufacturer. It is an optional device when ordering DC equipment. Due to its single function, inability to test capacity, poor measurement accuracy, and easy false alarm, it limits its widespread use. The test schematic is shown in Figure 1:
